Help Us Share the Gift of Reading!

Throughout September, Hillcrest, Highview, and Kinloch Elementary Schools will be collecting new books to support the Children’s DMC Book Drive! The goal is to collect 200 new books for Children’s Hospital of Michigan to bring comfort, hope, and a great story to children during their hospital stay.

Families who would like to help can donate newly purchased books appropriate for a pediatric setting at any of our three elementary schools throughout September. Thank you to our Crestwood community for helping brighten the day of a child, one book at a time!

The book drive runs from September 1 through September 30 with a goal of collecting 200 new books for Children’s DMC Hospital. Donated books must be newly purchased and appropriate for a pediatric setting. The flyer states, “Every child deserves comfort, hope, and a good story during their hospital stay. Help us brighten a young patient’s day.” Contact information includes learningsolutionsed@gmail.com, Instagram @learningsolutionsedvantage, and phone number (313) 288-5191. The flyer features colorful illustrations of stacked books along the left side and the Learning Solutions EdVantage and Children’s Hospital of Michigan logos.
When students grow something with their own hands, curiosity takes root. Meghan Giant, a teacher at Highview Elementary School, created a classroom full of young scientists last year through a plant growth unit that built genuine observation skills and excitement. Her commitment to hands-on science experiences shows what's possible when we make learning tangible and meaningful for every child.

Linda Taleb, Principal at Highview Elementary School, led her team to full implementation of the math workshop model this year through Classroom Learning Labs that put great teaching on display. By creating opportunities for teachers to observe experienced colleagues in action, Linda helped her staff see that the shift from whole-group to small-group math instruction wasn't just possible, it was achievable with the skills they already had. This is what happens when leaders invest in the power of peer learning and trust their teachers to grow together.

His approach paired partner work, independent practice, and targeted small group instruction to meet students exactly where they were. Stories like this showcase the thoughtful, student-centered teaching happening across Crestwood every day.

Meet Kristine Keilman, a first grade teacher at Highview Elementary School who knows how to spark genuine excitement in her students. Her math lesson on measurement didn't just teach skills, it built confidence and joy in every single student. This is exactly the kind of experience we want to celebrate and learn from as a district: intentional design that meets students where their enthusiasm lives and helps every child see themselves as capable learners.
