First grade teacher Jen Patrny from Kinloch Elementary reminds us why we invest in innovative learning opportunities. Through a Lysol MiniLabs grant, she created space for her students to explore science through creativity, resulting in everything from Germopoly board games to microbe trading cards. Her insight captures what happens when we trust young learners with meaningful challenges and the freedom to surprise us.
Count Day is TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 7th!
Count Day plays an important role in determining funding for our schools, and accurate student attendance helps ensure Crestwood School District receives the resources needed to support our students, staff, programs, and services.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are coming to Crestwood students!
We are excited to share that Highview, Hillcrest, and Kinloch have been selected by the Michigan Department of Education to participate in the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)! Beginning in October, students will be offered a fresh fruit or vegetable snack twice a week during the early afternoon.
The program helps introduce students to a wider variety of fruits and vegetables while encouraging healthy choices and lifelong healthy habits.
We are excited to bring this opportunity to our students and add a little more fresh, healthy fun to their school day!

When students step into the role of entrepreneurs, writers, and speakers, something powerful happens. Kari Gurshaw, a teacher at Kinloch Elementary School, led our 2nd grade Market Day this year, where students didn't just learn about economics, they lived it. By creating goods and services, earning classroom currency, and running their own market, students walked away with deep content knowledge and real confidence in their abilities. This is what happens when learning is rooted in authentic, student-led experience.

Just a reminder that our Color Run event today is a student-only event. We have been receiving many calls regarding this today. While we would absolutely love to have everyone join in on the fun, today’s event will be just for our students in order to maintain a safe and organized environment for everyone.

Looking for some family fun this weekend? The Dearborn Heights Library Fall Fest is happening Saturday, September 26th, from 12–4 PM at the Caroline Kennedy Library, 24590 George Street!
Families can enjoy a petting zoo, games and crafts, face painting, balloon animals, entertainment, local vendors, a tin can raffle, cider and donuts, and more.
This is a great opportunity to get out, enjoy the fall season, and connect with our community!

We’re excited to share some great news from Kinloch Elementary!
Kinloch was selected as one of 75 winners of The Meemic Foundation’s Back-to-School Grant, receiving $1,000 to support our students and their learning. The grant will be used to purchase headphones for Kinloch’s new STEAM classroom, with remaining funds helping support future student and classroom needs.
A special thank you to Jen Deprez, who took the time to submit the grant application to help bring these additional resources to our students. We appreciate her initiative and commitment to creating new opportunities for our Kinloch Koalas!

Dina Kaczmarczyk, Literacy Coach at Kinloch Elementary, worked alongside our 3rd and 4th grade teachers this year to help students build reading stamina, vocabulary, and confidence with complex texts. Her collaborative approach didn't just strengthen skills—it transformed how students showed up as readers. When educators work together to create supportive environments where students feel capable, engagement and growth follow naturally. That's the kind of impact we're proud to celebrate.

Do you know a Crestwood teacher who goes above and beyond for students? The 2027–2028 Michigan Teacher of the Year nomination window is now open!
The Michigan Department of Education is seeking nominations for outstanding educators who make a difference in the lives of their students and school communities. Parents, students, colleagues, and community members can nominate a deserving teacher. Nominees must be PreK–12 educators who work directly with students and have at least five years of teaching experience in Michigan.
Nominating a teacher is easy! You will need the teacher’s name and email address, school and district, grade level, your contact information, and a short paragraph explaining why the teacher deserves to be recognized.
Nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Across the Crestwood School District, students celebrated Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17th, learning about the U.S. Constitution while having some fun along the way!
At Kinloch Elementary, students showed their patriotic spirit by dressing in red, white, and blue. At Crestwood High School, advisory classes put their Constitution knowledge to the test in a schoolwide Kahoot competition, with separate competitions for 9th–10th graders and 11th–12th graders. Congratulations to Ms. Faber’s advisory class and Mr. Moitozo’s advisory class for coming out on top!
It was a great day of learning, friendly competition, and celebrating the principles and history of our Constitution across Crestwood!

Just wanted to send this out again today to stress the importance of not driving through the construction zone during arrival and dismissal. As you may have noticed, there were many trucks driving through on Kinloch street yesterday. I would also park further down Lawrence and Kinloch to avoid those trucks.

Elizabeth Juers and her 2nd grade class at Kinloch Elementary showed us something powerful this spring: when we create meaningful, motivating experiences and believe in what students can do, they consistently rise to meet us there. Her class didn't just win the iReady March Madness Championship—they proved that our young learners are ready to do hard things. This is the kind of teaching that defines our district.

Kinloch Road is currently an active construction zone. You will see multiple signs stating “Danger - Hard Hat Area” and “Danger - Live Wire Overhead.” Please do not drive through this area to drop off or pick up your child.
We are temporarily closing this area during arrival and dismissal to help keep students and families safe. However, please understand that this also impacts the construction schedule, as construction trucks need access to this area. We appreciate your patience as the work continues.
Car Loop
We have been doing a much better job with the car loop, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation while everyone learns this process. We do want to remind everyone that even one parked car can disrupt the entire car line and cause significant delays. This process only works when everyone follows the procedures. We understand that parking and walking a distance can be frustrating, but for the safety of our students and to keep traffic moving, please follow the designated procedures and avoid parking in the car loop.
Student Sales
We have certainly seen some of our students showing their entrepreneurial spirit! However, we want to remind families that students are not permitted to sell food, drinks, or any other products at school.
Thank you for your continued patience, cooperation, and support. We know that arrival and dismissal can be challenging, but when we all work together and follow the procedures, it makes a big difference for everyone.
