Crestwood School District Celebrates the Achievements of a Dedicated Educator, Mrs. Laura Benavides
Dearborn Heights , MI – The Crestwood School District proudly joins Wayne County Commissioner David Knezek in acknowledging the extraordinary contributions of Mrs. Laura Benavides, a remarkable 8th Grade English Language Arts teacher at Riverside Middle School, recently named Teacher of the Month.
Mrs. Benavides, a product of Holy Redeemer High School and a graduate of Wayne State University, holds a Master’s degree from Marygrove College. She has devoted over two decades to education, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Her journey from journalism to teaching showcases her passion for learning and her commitment to nurturing young minds.
In her 22 years in education, Mrs. Benavides has not only excelled in teaching but also played a crucial role outside the traditional scope of classroom duties. As a co-sponsor of the National Junior Honor Society at Riverside, she has been pivotal in fostering leadership and academic excellence among students.
Her influence extends far beyond Riverside Middle School. Numerous former students, now thriving in various professions, attribute their success to the foundation laid during their time in Mrs. Benavides’s classroom. They remember her not only as an educator but also as a mentor who has left an indelible mark on their lives.
During a recent gathering, Superintendent Dr. Youssef Mosallam, Associate Superintendent Andria O’Hara, Principal Scott Casebolt, and Assistant Principal Batool Eid joined Commissioner Knezek in expressing their admiration and support for Mrs. Benavides’s work.
Reflecting on her career, Mrs. Benavides shares, “The connections I’ve made with my students over the years are incredibly fulfilling. Watching them succeed in various fields, from medicine to entrepreneurship, brings me immense joy. They remind me why teaching is such a rewarding profession.”
Her advice to those considering a career in education is emphatic: “Go for it! Working with young people is rewarding in so many ways.” It’s this enthusiasm and dedication to education that makes Mrs. Benavides not just a teacher, but a true pillar of the Crestwood community.
In celebrating Mrs. Benavides’s achievement, the Crestwood School District acknowledges the profound impact she has had on the lives of her students and her vital role in shaping the future of our community.

Attention Crestwood Families:
Please read the attached holiday break letter from Superintendent Dr. Youssef Mosallam, reflecting on our year's journey and celebrating our significant growth.
Essential insights as we head into the holidays!

In the Crestwood District, not wide or vast,
The Grinch’s journey was quite a blast.
On the nineteenth of December, a day to remember,
The Grinch paid a visit to Kinloch, so tender.
Jill Marvaso, the principal, so clever and bright,
Transformed into Cindy-Lou Who, to the Grinch’s fright.
With a smile so warm, and eyes sparkling with glee,
She was set to change what the Grinch’s heart could be.
“Welcome, Mr. Grinch,” Cindy-Lou said with cheer,
“To Kinloch Elementary, we’re glad you’re here!
With letters from students, and banners in view,
We’ll show you the joy that can certainly ensue.”
Randy Brooks was there too, a helper so grand,
Assisting Cindy-Lou to take a firm stand.
The Who-kids, with pens, had written with glee,
Letters of warmth, for the Grinch to see.
Their handmade cards, so vibrant and bright,
Filled the halls with a magical light.
Teachers and staff, in a line so grand,
With their little Whos, hand in hand,
Shared songs and stories, in the candle’s glow,
Hoping their love would make the Grinch’s heart grow.
Now, every Who in the district knows,
Of the day the Grinch’s heart rose.
Thanks to Cindy-Lou, and all,
The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that fall.
As he left Kinloch, his heart full of cheer,
The Grinch carried with him memories so dear.
In this last stop, where the Koalas play,
He’d found the true meaning of the holiday.

STUDENTS FOR THE CHILDREN OF GAZA CHARITY VOLLEYBALL MATCH + BAKE SALE
Last evening, Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, MI, witnessed a remarkable gathering of students, educators, and community leaders for a heartening cause. The Charity Volleyball Match and Bake Sale, aimed at supporting the Palestinian Children Relief Fund, saw participation from Edsel Ford, Dearborn High, Fordson, and particularly Crestwood High Schools.
From 6 to 8 PM, the school echoed with cheers and support, not just for the teams playing but for a cause that reaches far beyond the borders of Dearborn. This event highlighted the unifying power of sports and community in supporting global humanitarian efforts.
The Crestwood community’s involvement was particularly noteworthy. District Superintendent Dr. Mosallam, embodying both leadership and sportsmanship, served as an enthusiastic line judge. His presence was a significant morale booster for everyone involved.
Adding to the spirit of the evening were Crestwood Teachers Sabah Hadous and Sharifa Bazzi, who joined in, exemplifying the commitment of educators to both their community and global causes. Alongside them, Trustee Billy Amen, Crestwood Alumni Commissioner David Knezek, and Councilman Dave Abdallah took to the court, demonstrating that their roles in the community extend well beyond their official capacities.
Congratulations to all the participants and organizers for creating such an unforgettable and impactful evening. Your dedication and efforts shine a light on the power of community and education in making a difference in the world.
